Tracking and managing renewable thermal energy
In renewable energy markets, a Renewable Thermal Certificate (RTC) verifies the environmental attributes of generating and using one dekatherm of renewable thermal energy. M-RETS® issues RTCs for various fuel sources, including clean hydrogen, renewable natural gas (RNG/ Biomethane), Biogas, and Combined Heat and Power (CHP).
Using rigorously validated carbon intensity pathways and models, M-RETS allows users to tailor their RTC claims. Organizations can handpick carbon intensities that align precisely with their unique environmental goals, empowering them to make informed choices for a more sustainable future.
How it works
The M-RETS RTC System issues one Renewable Thermal Certificate (RTC) for every dekatherm (Dth) of renewable thermal generation. To substantiate renewable thermal energy claims, M-RETS defines a Renewable Thermal Certificate (RTC) as a “whole RTC” that includes all environmental attributes. An RTC can also include optional verified carbon intensity data and track full, partial or injection point carbon lifecycles.
M-RETS supports state utility commissions and provincial regulators to facilitate tracking of their programs including what qualifies as an eligible generation technology.
RTC Tracking System Benefits
The RTC Tracking System is a web-based tracking platform that supports existing markets by providing:
- A higher level of integrity through a verification and certification process for every dekatherm (Dth)
- Increased market transparency for counter parties and regulators
- Increased liquidity (both exchange-based and over-the-counter bilateral transactions)
- (Optional) scientifically validated carbon values to facilitate GHG reduction claims
Generator registration
To register a generator, users must complete the following:
Online generator registration form containing information related to the characteristics of the generating unit.
If applicable: Schedule A from the M-RETS Terms of Use outlining the Generator Owner’s Designation of Responsible Party.
Engineering Report, performed by a licensed PE. M-RETS may require additional documentation to verify the information submitted in the generator registration.
Determine if the generator will use an independent reporting entity (IRE) or self report generation.
